SNAD 534 CD

Over the years, Archie Shepp has become one of the most revered of all jazz icons for his innovative music, which borders on the edge between free music and the blues.

This 2CD presents a fascinating insight into Shepp's diverse catalogue and features two of his finest albums, Blasé and Live At The Pan-African Festival, both recorded in 1969 for the BYG label.

Blasé was recorded in Paris with the musical assistance of Jeanne Lee, Lester Bowie, harp player Chicago Beau and drummer Philly Joe Jones and captured Shepp in a distinctly bluesy mood.  In contrast, Live At The Pan-African Festival, recorded in Algiers and featuring Alan Silva, Dave Burrell, Sunny Murray, Clifford Thornton as well as several Algerian and Tuareg musicians, highlights the free-form side of Shepp in full flight.

This reissue is accompanied by new sleevenotes (in English and in French) written by the respected French journalist Jacques Denis.
